Use AT&T Prepaid in Canada first before using in the USA

I bought an AT&T Prepaid phone and brought it with me while I was traveling Asia. The phone has not been activated. I plan to visit Canada for a week and then go back to Seattle.

Since AT&T Prepaid has Canada roaming, I want to activate my AT&T Prepaid phone, use it in Canada first, and then continuously use it when I go back to Seattle. Does anyone know if this is possible?

I mean, I'm sure you can use it in the U.S first, and then use the roaming service in Canada while you travel. But I'm not sure if it's possible to activate my AT&T Prepaid phone in AT&T website and use the roaming service in Canada right away, which is before you even use once in the U.S.

Does anyone have experience? Thank you!

Hello weisswelt, we're here to help you with getting your AT&T PREPAID phone activated.

As the ACE @formerlyknownas and the employee @Constructive mentioned, AT&T service cannot be activated outside the United States. This will allow your account to get connected with the AT&T servers.

For your benefit, we have some useful information on activating your AT&T PREPAID account that you can review at your convenience.

Let us know if this helps, and thank you for reaching out to the AT&T Community Forums.

Please don't focus my question on whether or not you can activate the AT&T Prepaid service outside the USA. I already paid the AT&T dealer and he said he is going to activate it for me upon my request.

Or let's just say that my friend activated an AT&T Prepaid Phone in the U.S. for me but did not turn on the device and just brought that phone to me to Canada. Would I be able to use the roaming service in Canada?

Thanks for your response, @weisswelt.

Be advised, if the AT&T Prepaid Plan is active with your device then you'll be able to roam on the cellular network.

Ummm riiiiight.  That's 🐂💩

Not if the phone isn't in the USA.   🤦🏼‍♀️.  Your phone will only be connected and able to be activated while connected to an AT&T tower.  AT&T does not have towers in Canada.

Or let's just say that my friend activated an AT&T Prepaid Phone in the U.S. for me but did not turn on the device

Then it's not activated.  Phone has to be turned on, service has to be paid for, in order for the phone to register on the network and be activated.

But keep making up scenarios that won't work.  We told you what does, so it's on you to sort that.

and just brought that phone to me to Canada.

Um, whatever...

Would I be able to use the roaming service in Canada?

Maybe you should have just stuck with this sentence?

AT&T prepaid current service plans offer free roaming in Canada and Mexico. End of story.

Data roaming may be at 2G speed. Rogers seems to be a consistently good roaming partner, Telus and Bell are not.
