Email-to-SMS gateway not working for prepaid

Switched to AT&T prepaid.  Cannot receive text from email via [email scrubbed] nor via @mms.att.net.  Response code 550 -Recipient could not be reached.

I can receive email from text (shows @txt.att.net address in From field) but the failure code is the same if I hit reply.  Tried with both Gmail and Protonmail.

I've got the same issue, and AT&T support is clueless. Doesn't seem to be related to the sending email server, or whether I use the txt.att.net, sms.att.net, or mms.att.net address.  Wonder if this is a recent issue or it just never worked?

Hi, Exy42! There are some steps that you can take to resolve your device's inability to receive text messages from email.

That response code you received means the recipient email address you entered is invalid or doesn't exist in the destination domain. If you have AT&T Internet account with an AT&T email address you may need to create or get a secure mail key or even configure the server settings on your account.

To configure server settings, view Set up AT&T email on smart devices when you visit Get AT&T email on a wireless device. Otherwise, the sender should consult and use the information provided by their Internet provider since what SMTP server they should connect to or how they should authenticate it is essential to send and/or receiving incoming and outgoing messages to a specific address.

Try this and let us know how it goes. Thank you for reaching out to AT&T Community Forums.

Thanks for the reply goodoldan.  It does work for some.  I have other coworkers for whom it works.  I know this because I have set up automated emails from our work to notify them of certain conditions.

Reading other instances of this situation, I noticed one or two people mentioned having att in the past with their same number. I wonder if, after porting the number away from att, the old number can't recognized again when we port back?  Is this your situation?

Lar, I assume you're a bot as you've shown no understanding of what the problem is.

Hello, @Exy42. Thank you for making us aware of this situation regarding your email to text messages not coming through. We understand that this is important. We want to help!

Let's try to reset your network settings (sometimes doing this can clear little glitches that may affect whether you properly receive or send texts):

    • iPhone: Settings>General>Reset>Reset network settings
    • Android: Settings>General Management>Reset>Reset network settings

Check out this support page for more information about Email to Text!

Let us know if this helps!

Already tried that.  No effect.

Please let me know how I can escalate this matter to someone who can confirm that an email address consisting of

[email scrubbed]

[email scrubbed]

is valid and not being rejected by att's email-to-sms gateway.

Thank you for that information, @Exy42

At this time you can reach out to the AT&T Email Postmaster to make sure the email is valid and not being rejected. At the bottom of the page you will find an FAQ that says "What does it mean if get an error emailing an AT&T Customer", if you will click on this you will be given the option to email them for assistance with why these email addresses are unable to receive correspondence.

Thank you for reaching out to AT&T Community Forums!

ATTHelp... your comment "There are some steps that you can take to resolve *your device's inability* to receive text messages from email" assumes that our devices (several of them) have developed some e-mail issue that only affects e-mails to the AT&T email server. Not likely, especially given that there are posts far and wide from different folks (on diverse mail servers) who are experiencing this issue ONLY with AT&T. I use a third party mail server (from an internet hosting company, not an provider like Google, Yahoo, etc), and experience no such issues anywhere else.

Exy42... Number was issued by AT&T as I recall, never ported away.
