Unlocking Iphone that is not fully paid off yet (I'm not the original owner)
Hello,
I bought a Iphone XS MAX a while ago on Facebook Marketplace, and that is carrier lock with AT&T, so far I didn't needed it to be unlock but now that I moved to France I would like to be able to use my phone.
When going on the unlock page of AT&T it give me this message
"Looks like you haven't paid off your device yet. Follow these steps to pay off your installment plan. Then, wait 48 hours before you submit a new request."
The problem is that I can't contact the previous owner and even if I do, I seriously doubt that he will finish paying it, also I could pay it myself but I need the credentials of the former owner that bought the phone from AT&T.
So, what can I do, what documents or proof do you need ? And how could we solve that issue ?
I try messaging you on Facebook, Tweeter and try to find an email address but it seems that you keep it well hidden, and no I can't call the customer service landline because I am living in Paris, FRANCE.
Thank you for your time and help,
Looking forward to read from you asap,
Dilan

I have a situation I've been dealing with for over a year now. AT&T closed my account and gave my number away without my knowledge. My account and phones are all paid off. I owe nothing to AT&T. Now, my number AT&,T have away is owned by a business. My phone is still linked to that number. AT&T can't seem to find my account and doesn't know how to unlock our phones.. I've been transferred to so many departments, yet no success. All I want to do is unlock our phones so we can go to a new carrier. Suggestions??

Did you apply for the unlock through the unlock portal as a non-customer?

I tried using the non AT&T customer to unlock my phone. It did get me a little further, but it still ended up not working to unlock the phone. Now what? I was in the phone with AT&T for HOURS yesterday trying for the umpteenth time. After all of the transferring me around to only have the conversation lose connection. So I had to call back and got no where. I'm so frustrated with this. I don't understand how 1. AT&T can just use my account and give my number away and now they don't know how to fix it. Especially since no one can find my account old account anywhere. It's only been a little over a year, so it's not like there is a big gap in time. I think AT&T should be sued for all the wrong doings they e done to customers. They even over charged my account $40 every month; $20/phone for unlimited data in which my plan already included the "free" unlimited data. It just keeps going and going for them to rip people off and then not help them.

I’m having this issue as well. No account, no contract and no balance. Can’t unlock due to portal returning in contract or balance owed.

@Tracy0524
You're posting on an old thread with some additional information that may or may not apply to you. The original poster says the phone was a second hand purchase. If you buy a phone second hand you have no idea whether the original owner paid it off or not. AT&T requires all Financial Obligations to be fulfilled including service in order for you to unlock your devices.
This Thread is just over a year old and should not be accumulating unrelated posts from people who have a slightly different problem. Please create your own new post
