Unable to unlock phone that's been paid off for months

I read all the other questions that are the same but none have answers.  I have an iPhone x that i want to move to a different carrier to trade in.  When i try to unlock it tells me there is a balance.  This phone was paid off years ago.  It was on a corporate account and i searched for the IMEI and it does not exist.  There is no record of the phone anywhere yet states it has a balance which cant be true as it is many years old and long out of contract.  How can i get to someone that can help me track down if this is actually true and get it cleared up.  And if it matters, yes i still have access to the account it was on but as i said it is not on that account in any way, shape or form any longer.

If you are trading it in, why worry about unlocking it? I know ATT does not require trade in phones to be unlocked, I’m sure other carriers don’t either.
