Transferring my AT&T number to a new carrier

Thank you @formerlyknownas for that wonderful information. Should you cancel your AT&T services the remaining balance would be due in full and will appear on your next bill.

There are a couple of steps you will need to complete in order to transfer your wireless number to another provider.  We have outlined the steps below, or you can find all the information you'll need via our transfer your wireless number to another provider support page.

Here’s how to get started:

First, you will want to request a Number Transfer PIN to begin the process. This PIN replaces the account pass-code you had to use prior when transferring your service.

•  Make sure to request the Number Transfer PIN before signing up with your new service provider.
• Don’t disconnect your AT&T service prior to the transfer. Otherwise, you will need to reactivate it to obtain the Number Transfer PIN your new service provider needs to complete the process.

Am I able to transfer my AT&T phone number to a new carrier if my phone is not paid off but I intend on keeping my AT&T service and just getting a new phone number?

You can port out your number, you just need to understand what the consequences are...

Porting your phone number to a different service provider. Cancels your AT&t service on that phone line and will result in the full balance remaining on your installment being due in full on the next bill. If this is the only phone line on your account, the only line entirely on your account, it would terminate your service with AT&t entirely.

If there are any credits being given for a promotion, those credits terminate.

If it's a one line account and you add a new phone line, switch your existing phone to that phone line, it won't close the account. You would need to create an access ID for the new phone line so you can access online.

But you're still going to get a bill for the remainder of the installment once you cancel service on your current line
