Preventing accidental international calling - huge bill

One of my family members accidentally returned a call from their cousin in a foreign country. AT&T happily billed me $365 plus taxes adding $500+ to my monthly bill. At $4 per minute!

There is no way to prevent such things from happening. I called support to remove international calling ability. Doesn't look like they can. Appears to be a convenient way to allow people make a genuine mistakes and slap them with high bills.

I am aware of the $15 monthly plan - appears to be too high just so we can have a insurance against such problems.

Other than that, is there a way to avoid such problems?

In your online account under International options there is an option line item referred to as  " International long distance pay per use"

You want to turn off, or de-select this option.

@formerlyknownas That’s for digital home phone, not cellular.

@AnandhKR Support can block international calling. Not sure why you were told different.

@formerlyknownas that option is not available for cell phones as @sandblaster said.

@sandblaster I was on call with support for more than an hour, they said they need to work with their manager, will update me. No response.

I am not expecting any response since this appears to be intentional to either bill huge $ for unintended international calls or get people to sign up for monthly plan.

There is no way to remove pay-per-use international calling as far as I know. Spent so much time trying to find a way to remove international calling feature.

Easy. You miss a call and hit call back without even noticing the number.

I corrected the link.

That was an option on my cell numbers in 2019.  Not digital phone

@Constructive Since we don’t know the age of the family member that had the “accident”, you can’t assume they knew the cousin lived out of the country or even if they did know, may not have known how much such a call would cost.

@Constructive for your fyi, iphones call back as soon as you touch the entry in the call log. there is no indication if it is international or not, only the name. FWIW you can have multiple phone numbers under the same entry.

You have to enter the numbers in your contacts to allow active armor or DND to pass calls through, no?
