Incoming Text Messages on International Plan

The details say sending a text starts it.  Nothing about receiving a text.  But ANY data usage also triggers it, so you want your phone tightened down pretty much.  I would consider turning off cellular data/roaming for the days you don't want to use it and just use Wi-Fi.  

If Wi-Fi calling works on your phone you would only get these when on a Wi-Fi network.

Received texts are free. A received text does not trigger the $10 charge. 

@sandblaster Hi Sandblaster, I have seen a lot of your answers to the questions about "receiving incoming text messages (SMS sent directly to the phone) when abroad". You confirmed that it will be free and won't trigger the international day pass as long as we turn off roaming for the AT&T number when we are outside US.

I do have a post-paid and unlimited plan. But when I asked the staff both in store and from online support, they always said it is not free and will trigger the pass. May I ask where did you get this confirmation? Because it is really confusing. Only in this post ‎Do I get charged for incoming AT&T international texts? | AT&T Community Forums (att.com) there was one reply from AT&T staff saying it is free. If this is the case, I really don't understand why their staff in store and from online keep saying the opposite. Thank you so much!

Daily fee: The first time you use data, make or receive a call, or send a text message in an IDP Destination, you’ll automatically be charged a $10 daily fee. When more than 1 line on your account is charged a daily fee on the same calendar date, 1 line will be charged a $10 daily fee and each additional line will be charged a reduced daily fee of $5. Calendar date is determined by your local U.S. time zone, not the country you visited. The line charged $10 is not necessarily the line used first on that date. Text messages received are rated as domestic and do not trigger a daily fee.

Thank you so much for this. It is really reassuring. May I ask you for one more question, since I see you know much more than the staff I talked to. ;) 
In order to only receive the text message on my AT&T number when I am abroad (no need for any data, making calls or sending texts), I need to:
1. Turn on the International Day Pass
2. Turn off this line in the Cellular Plan on my iPhone
3. Turn off Data Roaming 

Is the above correct? Having the International Day Pass is a must in order to receive the text message abroad, right?

@pumpkinpotato You do not need to have international day pass to receive a text. Incoming texts are free whether you have the day pass or not. I would advise you get the day pass but it’s not required to receive a text. You should not turn off that line in the cellular plan on your phone. Doing that disables your ATT number. Yes, you should turn data roaming off.
